The type E element is an expanding configuration with the elastomeric tube located on the outside of the rim (instead of the inside as with the constricting types). The tube is separable from the rim and is constrained on either side by side plates which provide pinned restraint points for the externally mounted friction shoe assemblies. The friction shoes are of two configurations. One type is made from a steel stamping with no cooling passages and is intended for light duty applications. The second type has small integral cooling passages and is intended for medium duty applications.
The torque transmitted by the friction shoe assembly is conveyed via the pinned attachments into the combination side plate and rim. These units are best utilized in medium torque, low to medium speed applications.
