The hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders lower the radial gripping segments into the engaged position. The opposed-wedge design provides a weight-energized, fail-safe grip.

When the crane pulls tension on the pile string, the hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders raise the radial gripping segments to release the pile.
