Radial gripping segments in the retracted position, as the tool is inserted into a horizontal pile section.
The operator actuates the hydraulic cylinder to drive the mandrel upward (to the left), forcing the radial gripping segments outward against the inside of the pile.
The weight-energized (fail-safe) gripping segments hold the pile section firmly as it is lifted and maneuvered into position.
After the pile section is welded to the pile string, the crane releases tension, and the operator actuates the hydraulic cylinder, moving the mandrel downward and retracting the gripping segments into the released position.
